NVCC Implements Web-Based Math Curricula

Naugatuck Valley Community College in Connecticut has deployed online math curricula for 11 of its remedial math classes this fall. The school is using Academic Systems Algebra from Plato Learning.

Academic Systems Algebra is a Web-based multimedia solution designed to help students master the fundamentals of algebra in an interactive environment. The school had previously been using an older version of the system, which required software to be installed on students' computers. This version, launched back in May, is entirely online.

"This new software is 100 percent Web-delivered," said Dr. Bonnie Simon, NVCC's academic division director for math and science. "Now, if a student can't do their online work from campus or home, they can do it from a library or anywhere else there is an Internet connection. It's much more convenient from the student's point of view."

Academic Systems Algebra will be used in traditional classrooms, distance learning environments, and hybrid courses at NVCC. The school currently serves more than 10,000 credit and non-credit students.
