Open Source Digital Music Library SW from IU
Indiana University has released open source software, called Variations, that allows you to create a digital music library system. College and university libraries may digitize audio and musical scores to provide to their users in an interactive, online environment, including streaming audio and scanned score images. Faculty and students may then create their own playlists or bookmark materials, including specific segments for easy access later. Libraries may guard against intellectual property issues by setting up access rules to suit local needs. The original development of the Variations software began nearly fifteen years ago. It received funding from the National Science Foundation in 2000, and additional funding from the Institute of Museum and LibraryServices in 2005. Indiana University will record a Variations webinar March 4 to be posted subsequently and accessible from the Variations open source Web page, http://variations.sourceforge.net.
