SCUP and Getty Put Campus Preservation Plans and Projects Online

Campusheritage.org, a new Web site, will provide information on preservation projects funded as part of the Getty Foundation's Campus Heritage program, a five-year grant initiative. The Campus Heritage Initiative, begun in 2002, funded preservation planning projects at 86 colleges and universities nationwide, in addition to surveys of hundreds of small liberal arts colleges.

The Web site is the result of a grant by the Getty Foundation to the Society for College and University Planning (SCUP), a higher education association focused on integrated planning. The online resource will support the dissemination of knowledge about the research and planning involved in the preservation of significant buildings and historic landscape sites.

"As the early grantees completed their projects, we were keenly aware that their final reports had the potential to be strong resources for colleges and universities working to preserve their historic resources and an opportunity to demonstrate how preservation could be integrated into the master planning process," said Joan Weinstein, associate director of foundation. "We looked for ways to share lessons learned with the broader higher education community."

In the fall of 2008, the Getty Foundation awarded a grant to SCUP for $307,000 to analyze project results and to create and maintain the Web site to share lessons learned, as well as to develop partnerships with other organizations interested in preservation planning.
