Walden Rolls Out Mobile Learning Platform for Adult Students
Walden University has begun deploying a new course content delivery system for its students. Dubbed MobileLearn, the system is designed to allow mobile students to tailor the way they receive course materials.
According to Walden, MobileLearn is designed to make learning as flexible as possible and to make distance learning as accessible as possible for the university's adult student population. It includes support for watching recorded lectures, accessing assigned texts, watching course videos and simulations, and downloading and watching content on various mobile devices. It was introduced in a recent pilot program and is now available for several of Walden's programs, according to information released by the university. A full rollout for all programs is expected to be completed in 2010.
"Walden is always looking for ways to use technology to make it easier to access and successfully complete our degree programs," said Jonathan Kaplan, president of Walden University, in a statement released this week. "We realize that each student has his or her own learning styles, and we believe meeting those needs is a key factor in helping students achieve deeper understanding and retention of knowledge. MobileLearn allows students to interact with content in a way that best fits their individual learning preferences and lifestyles."
The university said it's also "exploring future expansions of MobileLearn capabilities, including applications for iPhone, Kindle and Facebook."
Walden University is an institution targeted toward working professionals, offering doctoral, master's, and baccalaureate degrees, as well as teacher preparation, certificate, and other programs. It's owned by the Laureate International Universities Network, which operates more than 40 online and campus-based institutions serving about 500,000 students around the world.
