U Chicago Moves to IP Video Delivery

The University of Chicago is running a new delivery system to broadcast video over its network to most buildings on campus and to support real-time broadcast of campus events. The university chose Haivision's Furnace, which was developed specifically for higher ed environments.

Furnace can be used for live, pre-scheduled, and video-on-demand programming delivered over both wired and wireless networks. Campus viewers get access to the videos either by running Haivision's InStream software-based player on their computers or via Haivision's Stingray set-top boxes (STBs) installed in common areas and university departments. The broadcast capabilities have been used to show live events, including groundbreakings, ceremonies, and presentations by distinguished university visitors.

"We needed to find an affordable, easy-to-use alternative to video delivery over coax, and Haivision's Furnace system allows us to use existing infrastructure to make video available across the campus to any connected user on any type of computer," said Ifeanyi Okonma, U Chicago's streaming media administrator.
