Johns Hopkins Brings Linux, Mac Users into Active Directory

Johns Hopkins University will be using a program to help bring Linux and Mac computer users into its Microsoft Active Directory fold. The Baltimore university has acquired an education-priced two-year site license of Likewise Enterprise for Education from Likewise. That license will enable its departments and hospital facilities in sites around the world to centralize their user authentication and directory management.

The company, which introduced an education-specific pricing program in late January 2011, offers Likewise Open, a free open source product for small groups. The edition that Johns Hopkins has signed up is priced in high volumes at $9.90 per workstation and $49.90 per server per year.

"Likewise Enterprise will allow us to manage our vast campus network centrally using Active Directory," said Kyle Reynolds, IT manager at the Institute for Computational Medicine. "The savings we will achieve by reducing operating costs and eliminating additional hardware required by other solutions adds to the value we're getting from Likewise."

Other Likewise clients have included Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta and the University of Oregon in Eugene.
