HiveSocial Releasing Higher Education Platform Version 3.0

Enterprise Hive is upgrading its HiveSocial Web communities to version 3.0. The Irvington, VA-based firm has also launched HiveSocial Now for Education, which provides a Web-based platform for use by faculty and administrators at colleges and universities.

For example, according to Lauren Hart Piper, vice president of product management, Atlanta Metropolitan College in Georgia uses HiveSocial Now as the college's intranet for administrators, faculty, and staff.

SunGard Higher Education, headquartered in Malvern, PA, has about 120 communities for its user group. Customers and employees use the Web-based software to communicate with other education professionals on a variety of issues.

The University System of Georgia uses HiveSocial to create communities that link staff and technology leaders from across 30 campuses to discuss their administrative software systems. HiveSocial also includes a community for education technology leaders and chief information officers to discuss relevant issues.

New features in version 3.0, which uses the Microsoft .NET 4.0 Framework, include:

  • Accessibility to connect to existing applications and integrate with already established Web sites;
  • Easier content materials;
  • Enhanced search capabilities;
  • Creation of unlimited groups and subgroups; and
  • The option to charge for premium materials.

There is a monthly subscription fee for HiveSocial Now for Education, which runs on the same platform as edu1world.org, a professional social community network for higher education administrators, faculty, and associations that work with educational technology.
