EBSCO Adds Access to OpenEdition Materials

An agreement between EBSCO Publishing, the parent company of the EBSCO Host online research service, and the three open access French publishing platforms that make up OpenEdition will allow materials in the humanities and social sciences from the latter to be searchable through EBSCO Discovery Service.
The agreement both increases the amount of materials available for searching and internationalizes the searchable offerings accessible through EBSCO.
The OpenEdition platforms are designed to foster research and publishing through the open access format of scientific papers and are operated out of the Centre pour ľédition électronique ouverte (Cléo), with bases in Marseille, Paris and Lisbon.
Cléo's participating partners include: the CNRS (the National Centre for Science Research), the University of Provence, the EHESS (the Graduate School of Social Sciences), and the University of Avignon.
The three platforms that make up OpenEdition include:
- Revues.org, a venue for more than 300 journals and book series in the fields of the social sciences and humanities that provides an opportunity for research units, publishers, and organizations to publish texts online;
- Calenda, a scientific calendar for both the social sciences and humanities with announcements of approximately 16,000 scientific events that has been published since 2000; and
- Hypotheses.org, which hosts more than 200 scholarly blogs.
The increased access will allow greater availability of materials for the users of EBSCO. EBSCO maintains more than 350 for-fee searchable databases with 20,000 providers and metadata from an estimated 70,000 book publishers. In addition, EBSCO has a library of approximately 300,000 e-books, according to information provided by the company.
Materials available for searching through EBSCO come from sources including Elsevier, Wiley Blackwell, Springer Science & Business Media, Taylor & Francis Informa, Sage Publications, LexisNexis, Thomson Reuters (Web of Science), JSTOR, ARTstor, Credo Reference, Oxford University Press, World Book, ABC-CLIO, and others.
