New Panopto Adds Recording to iOS Devices

Panopto has come out with a new version of its media capture and management application, which will shortly be available with an app version for the Apple iPhone and iPad. Panopto release 4.1 also now supports an integration standard that allows users to pull up media through their learning management system (LMS).

The iOS app version of the software, appearing soon in the iTunes App Store, lets students view, search, record, and add notes to media on their Apple devices and then submit the recordings as assignments. That media can consist of video, slides, and screen capture.

Recording can also be done on a Mac or Windows PC. Once a student has submitted a recording, it sits in a dropbox that other students can't see or modify, but that the instructor can view. The instructor can use Panopto's notes functionality to provide synchronized feedback within the presentation.

The new release supports Learning Tools Interoperability (LTI), an emerging standard from IMS Global Learning Consortium that allows external tools and resources to be integrated into an LMS. LTI is supported by the major vendors, including Blackboard, Desire2Learn, Moodle, Sakai, and Instructure. This integration allows the user to access Panopto material directly from his or her LMS with a single click.

"Simplifying the connection between Panopto and Instructure Canvas lets faculty focus on teaching and not on the tools." noted Devlin Daley, co-founder and CTO at Instructure.

Other new features include:

  • Active Directory integration with cloud-hosted installations of Panopto;
  • Support for batch operations to allow the administrator to add new users to the system in bulk;
  • Integration of other media formats within a Panopto library that can also be mixed with other Panopto resources;
  • Playback speed adjustment;
  • Embedded Web pages;
  • Hotkey support;
  • Screen capture support on multi-monitor systems; and
  • New management tools for usage monitoring and activity logging, including stats of hours of content viewed, hours recorded, and hours transcribed.
