U Miami and UHealth Adopt Integrated ECM Platform

The University of Miami and the University of Miami Health System (UHealth) will integrate a new enterprise content management (ECM) system into their existing systems to automate and streamline departmental processes for students, patients, and faculty.

For the project, the university chose Hyland Software's OnBase Online, a cloud-based suite of document and process management systems, to cover 60 academic departments at the university and 30 outpatient facilities and three hospitals within the university health system.

In addition to integrating hardware and infrastructure equipment, U Miami and UHealth will adopt OnBase Online's Workday human resources management (HRM) tool to manage employee documents and information. To streamline clinical and administrative functions UHealth will employ OnBase' Epic electronic medical record (EMR) software, which uses content-centric automation to capture, store, and manage patient information; and for making application and review processes for admissions, financial aid, and the registrar's office for efficient UM will implement PeopleSoft Campus Solutions (PSCS), a student information system (SIS) designed to manage student data in real time.

"We've been utilizing document management technology for the past 20 years but we needed a robust, enterprise-class solution capable of integrating with our existing systems and meeting the specific needs of the University's academic, business, patient and research needs," said James Balter, senior business systems analyst at the University of Miami, in a prepared statement. "Hyland's extensive industry expertise and OnBase's ability to integrate with our core applications without custom coding made this a perfect fit for UM."

The University of Miami enrolls approximately 16,000 students at its four south Florida locations. The 239-acre Coral Gables campus houses two colleges and seven schools. The 68-acre Leonard M. Miller School of Medicine includes three university-owned hospitals. The 18-acre waterfront Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science campus is located on Virginia Key in Biscayne Bay; the south campus, located southwest of Coral Gables, is a 136-acre site used for conducting research and development projects; and the 76-acre Richmond campus is located near the south campus. The university's 2012-2013 operating budget is $2.7 billion, with $1.9 billion projected for the medical campus.

Located in south Florida, the University of Miami Health system employs more than 1,500 physicians and scientists at three hospitals and more than 30 outpatient facilities in Miami-Dade, Broward, Palm Beach, and Collier Counties. In conjunction with UM's Leonard M. Miller School of Medicine, UHealth combines patient care with clinical trials, research, and education.
