Boston College Upgrades Projection Technology

Boston College has deployed more than 70 new projectors in classrooms, seminar rooms and an auditorium, with more upgrades on the horizon, according to a release.

The school chose Christie projectors for the deployment, outfitting its seminar rooms with LWU420 projectors, featuring 1920 x 1200 WUXGA resolution, 4,200 ANSI lumens brightness, and a 1,000:1 contrast ratio.

Classrooms in the arts and sciences building have been equipped with LWU505 projectors, which boast native 1920 x 1200 WUXGA resolution with 5,000 ANSI lumens brightness, a 2,000:1 contrast ratio, and motorized lens shift for zoom and focus with a center mount lens design and one-button lens release capability.

For the auditorium, an 80-seat theater-style room, the university chose the DHD800, a 1-chip DLP projector with full HD 1920 x 1080 native resolution, 8,000 ANSI lumens brightness, and up to 7,500:1 contrast ratio capability.

"The price point is fantastic compared to any other manufacturer," said Jim Clements, project manager, Media Technology Services, Boston College, in a release. "Nobody comes close to offering what Christie offers. If you can install a Christie projector, why would you buy anything else?"

According to the release, phase two of the project will result in an additional 20 projectors on campus, including a Christie L2K1000 installed in a 200-person capacity auditorium located in the admissions and fine arts building. The L2K1000 is an LCD projector featuring native 2048 x 1080 resolution, 10,000 ANSI lumens brightness, and 3,000:1 contrast ratio.

Given their recent experience in upgrading projection technology, Clements said that more enhancements may be on the way for the institution.

"We've gone out of our comfort zone in model type and we're starting to incorporate a number of different models. That kind of success just breeds more success for us to go back to the product," Clements said in a release. "We have a sporting facility that we're looking at doing some upgrades there — maybe we want to put in some of these environment-safe outdoor panels. Maybe we want to put in some video walls. Based on our experiences with Christie, it would certainly lead us to follow its product line."
