Udemy Reaches 2 Million Students

Online course provider Udemy has reached the 2 million-student milestone, only five months after it reached the 1 million-student mark.

Udemy is an online course platform where experts, including practicing faculty members in K-12 and higher education, can create custom courses and market them to students around the world. The platform currently hosts more than 13,000 courses from 7,000 experts, and instructors publish more than 800 new courses each month.

Udemy launched in 2010, and in its first year it enrolled an average of 24 students per day. The platform took off in 2013, achieving an average of 9,061 course enrollments per day. According to the company, its revenue and student base grew more than 300 percent over the last 12 months, and student course enrollments grew more than 400 percent in the last 12 months.

Students can access Udemy courses though any Internet-connected computer, and the company also provides native Android and iOS apps for course access on iPads, iPhones and Android tablets or smart phones. According to the company, the Udemy iPhone and iPad app has been installed on nearly 1 million devices.

The company touts its platform as a way for students to change careers, earn a promotion or keep up with changes in their current career and for experts to earn extra cash by sharing their expertise students around the world. According to information on the company's site, "the average instructor earns $7,000 per year per course."
