XanEdu Adds Lexile Framework for Reading and Writing to Higher Ed Literacy Suite

XanEdu, a  digital content delivery platform for higher education, has added EdSphere to its suite of literacy products.

EdSphere is a reading, writing and vocabulary development platform based on the Lexile Framework. It was created by MetaMetrics, the company that developed the Lexile Framework for Reading and Lexile Framework for Writing, and the research behind those frameworks was incorporated into the learning platform.

XanEdu is now a certified distributor of EdSphere and is targeting the program at university and college students who need remedial work in reading and writing. According to information on the XanEdu site, "EdSphere is best suited for developmental or 100-level reading and/or writing classes."

EdSphere provides students with personalized, self-directed learning activities. The software uses the Lexile scale to measure students' progress in reading and writing and provides activities targeted to the students' skill level. EdSphere's reporting suite also lets teachers "access and monitor their students' reading practice, writing activities and vocabulary development," according to information from MetaMetrics.

The reading skills development component of EdSphere lets students access "millions of targeted articles across a wide range of topics," according to MetaMetrics. The idea is to provide students with reading material that is interesting and engaging to them and is also at the appropriate Lexile reading level. Other EdSphere activities include paragraph editing, where students can identify and correct errors in grammar, capitalization, spelling and punctuation; timed writing, which provides writing prompts and then instantly scores essays based on Lexile measures; and concept clues, which use word association to teach new vocabulary.

Further information about EdSphere can be found on the EdSphere site.
