NYU's Steinhardt School To Launch Online Graduate Programs

New York University's Steinhardt School of Culture, Education and Human Development will launch its first three online graduate degree programs in late 2016 and early 2017.

The NYU unit that focuses on the needs of children and families, particularly in urban areas, will begin its online graduate program by offering degrees in speech pathology, counseling and guidance and occupational therapy.

While other schools in NYU already offer online programs, these will be firsts for Steinhardt, which will combine the program with an effort to use data and research to learn how effective online learning can be.

"With technology providing so many new ways to connect students and educators, another question arises," said NYU Steinhardt Dean Dominic Brewer, "how to draw on our expertise to employ new technologies while preserving the qualities we most value in the classroom."

Once the courses receive approval from the appropriate university and accrediting bodies, 2U will manage the programs for the school, supplying its software-as-a-service technology while Steinhardt will be responsible for curriculum and course content, admissions and student assessment.

Steinhardt officials said they expect to follow the first three online programs with more in teacher education and other disciplines that the school offers courses in, such as education, health, media and performing and visual arts.

"We see this partnership, which has had and will continue to have departmental and faculty involvement, as a model for embracing digital learning," Brewer added.
