U Nebraska-Lincoln Opens High-Tech Learning Commons
The University of Nebraska-Lincoln has opened a new high-tech gathering place where students can study and collaborate 24 hours a day.
The
Adele Hall Learning Commons, which opened on January 11, is a 30,000
square foot space located on the first floor of the Love Library North.
The facility can accommodate 500 people at a time, with additional
seating available in the adjacent outdoor plaza.
Key features of the Adele Hall Learning Commons include:
- Moveable furniture designed to accommodate individual or group work;
- 18 private rooms for group collaboration, with an online reservation system for booking;
- One Button Studio space for recording presentations;
- Digital Learning Center where students can participate in self-paced, computer-aided study;
- ASKus Exchange and Huskertech help station for information technology and library help;
- PC stations, wireless Internet access and charging stations; and
- Dunkin' Donuts coffee and baked good cafe.
"The
Adele Hall Learning Commons will be the core of the student's academic
experience," said Harvey Perlman, chancellor of the university, in a
prepared statement. "It returns Love Library to its central place in
the academic environment of a modern 21st-century university."
The
cost of the redevelopment project was $10 million, $7 million of which
was provided by private donations, with the university funding the
remaining $3 million. One of the private donations was made by the
family of Donald J. Hall, chairman of Hallmark Cards Inc., in memory of
his wife, the late Adele Coryell Hall, who was a UNL alumnus.
