UMUC to Offer Free Online Coding Program for Students and Grads

University of Maryland University College students and graduates can sharpen their coding skills at no cost thanks to a new partnership with technology talent development company Revature. Revature's online training program is designed to provide a pathway to successful software development careers regardless of a student's major or technical experience, according to a press release.

"Through this partnership, students with non-technical academic backgrounds can expand their career options by mastering the latest software programs and computer platforms," said Nikki Sandoval, associate vice president for alumni and career services at UMUC, in a statement. "The Revature program offers them an accessible approach to IT training that will complement any career path."

Revature's RevaturePro product provides online instruction in enterprise software development languages, guided projects, assessments and support from industry mentors. The self-paced courses include Java, Microsoft.NET and front-end web development, and more. Participants build an online portfolio to showcase their projects, skills and capabilities.

The company also offers a free coding bootcamp at its Reston, VA headquarters, in which participants can build on what they learned through RevaturePro. Graduates of the 12-week program receive professional certifications and have the opportunity to work for Revature clients.

"Coding skills are necessary to succeed in today's marketplace across a range of industries, so we've designed a program that prepares students for a great career in software development," said Joe Mitchell, Revature's executive vice president of academic partnerships, in a statement. "Our programs give students with any academic background the chance to learn cutting-edge technologies, train in Reston, VA after graduation, and secure a job at top U.S. companies. It's a win-win solution for everyone."
