UIUC Prof to Head Team Studying Advanced Multimedia
- By Paul McCloskey
University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign computer science professor Klara Nahrstedt was picked as chairman of one of the newest of the Association of Computing Machinery's famous special interest groups, this one focusing on advanced multimedia applications.
At the University of Illinois, Nahrstedt is the Principal Investigator for the Multimedia Operating System and Networking Group (MONET).
Nahrstedt now heads UIUC's Multimedia Operating System and Networking Group, which is working to develop "tele-immersive 3D multi-camera room environments." That includes studying ways to enable "distributed physical activities such as physical therapy, sport activities, and entertainment."
Nahrstedt said she wants to use her ACM pulpit to push for advances in multimedia and networking technologies in the realms of humanities, sciences, arts, and medicine.
"We are living in exciting times when digital video and audio are becoming available via different platforms, in multiple size and shapes," she said. "However, it is not yet ubiquitous and pervasive. I plan to energize the multimedia community to make the multimedia technologies pervasive across many boundaries."Read More:
