Semester Online Adds 9 Courses, Opens Spring Registration

Semester Online, an online learning program that offers for-credit courses through a consortium of universities and colleges, has opened enrollment for its spring semester with a wider offering of courses.

The consortium that makes up Semester Online includes Boston College, Brandeis University, Emory University, Northwestern University, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, University of Notre Dame, Wake Forest University, and Washington University in St. Louis. Technology and infrastructure are provided by 2U, including the bi-directional learning tool ("BLT") used in Semester Online courses. For the spring semester, Semester Online has added nine new courses, bringing the total to 19. Courses being taught in spring 2014 include:

  • Boston College: How to Rule the World, The War that Never Ends;
  • Brandeis University: Psychological and Socio-Cultural Perspectives on Health, The Hebrew Bible/Old Testament: Then and Now;
  • Emory University: Baseball and American Culture, Drugs and Behavior, Power, Politics and Religion in America;
  • Northwestern University: Differential Equations for Engineers and Scientists, Electronics Out of the Box;
  • University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill: Introductory Finance, Marketing: Core Concepts and Tools, Strategic Management, Financial Accounting and Reporting, Leading and Managing: An Introduction to Organizational Behavior;
  • University of Notre Dame: Shakespeare and Film;
  • Wake Forest University: Introduction to Bioethics; and
  • Washington University in St. Louis: Critical Earth Issues, Introduction to Psychology, Environmental and Energy Policies.

"The fall pilot of Semester Online has been a successful start for this groundbreaking online education program with more than 100 students enrolled across 10 courses. Beginning [this week], undergraduate students around the globe can apply for our spring 2014 courses, including new offerings led by faculty from Brandeis University and Wake Forest University," said Andrew Hermalyn, 2U's executive vice president and general manager of Semester Online, in a prepared statement. "The expansion of Semester Online's course offerings demonstrates the speed at which the program is growing, as we provide more students the opportunity to participate in this unique academic experience with live online classes of fewer than twenty students per class, led by renowned professors from the nation's best undergraduate institutions."
