Miami U Integrates Student Assessment System with LMS

Miami University in Oxford, OH has streamlined its student assessment process by integrating its assessment platform with its learning management system (LMS).

The university uses the Chalk & Wire assessment platform "to define, document, assess and analyze student learning outcomes for individuals within its College of Arts and Science, College of Creative Arts, College of Education, Health and Society and for some of their General Education programs," according to information from the university. In the past, students had to upload their assignments twice, once to Chalk & Wire and again to the university's Canvas learning management system, and instructors had to assess and grade student assignments separately in both systems.

Chalk & Wire recently became a certified partner with Instructure, the company behind the Canvas LMS, and Chalk & Wire integrated its assessment with Canvas for Miami University. Chalk & Wire assignments now appear directly in the Canvas user interface as normal assignments at the course level.

"Now, as the systems work together seamlessly, we can avoid a lot of duplicate data entry and have a much more efficient assessment process," said Cheryl Irish, director of accreditation and assessment at Miami University, in a prepared statement.

According to Chalk & Wire, the integration of the two systems will help faculty members spend more time on teaching and less time assessing and grading student work, and make it easier for students to access assignments, submit work and receive timely feedback.

The certified partnership between Chalk & Wire and Instructure means the Canvas team has formally reviewed and certified with integration from Chalk & Wire.
