Fayetteville State Signs Up for Science Contract Mentoring

An institution in North Carolina will be implementing a mentor-protégé program specifically focused on science. Fayetteville State University signed an agreement with Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE) under a mentoring program sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy. ORISE's focus is on research related to the health risks of occupational hazards, assessment of environmental cleanup, response to radiation medical emergencies, support of national security and emergency preparedness and education of the next generation of scientists.

The mentoring program is specifically intended to enhance protégés' capabilities to compete for federal contracts.

In the case of Fayetteville State, said Chancellor James Anderson, the initiative is expected to help the institution "successfully procure contracts, develop a mature STEM business model, compete for grants and develop white papers and communicate and market its progress."

The university is the first member of the group of historically black colleges and universities selected to participate in program. ORISE is managed by Oak Ridge Associated Universities, a non-profit consortium of 115 institutions that brings faculty and students together to collaborate on scientific initiatives in partnership with the Oak Ridge National Laboratory.
