'There is really no cure-all solution for spyware,' advises Christofer Sean Cordes in his November 2005 Educause Quarterly article, 'Monsters in the Closet: Spyware Awareness and Prevention.' But awareness helps, along with some understanding of the general characteristics of spyware and the efforts underway on behalf of spyware prevention. And if you want an ounce of prevention, Cordes has some specific suggestions, mentioning a range of possibilities including Spykiller.com (now TrustSoft), Lavasoft's Adware , Spybot Search and Destroy , and even add-ons like the Google Toolbar with Popup Blocker or SpoofStick . In a report published this past summer by the Pew Internet & American Life Project, analysts concluded that nine out of 10 Internet users have adjusted their behavior out of fear of falling victim to spyware, and that many of the 'fears are grounded in experience.'
