Google Names 20 Female Collegians Tech Scholars

Google Inc. announced the 20 winners of a scholarship it is funding to honor the memory of Anita Borg, a computer scientist who promoted science and engineering education for women. Ten of the winners, who were picked from more than 250 applications from students at 115 different universities across the country, will receive $10,000. Another 13 finalists will receive $1,000 each.Alan Eustace, senior vice president of engineering & research at Google, pledged to "continue to build programs that encourage women to pursue careers in the sciences and to build on Anita's legacy."
After receiving her doctorate in computer science from New York University in 1981, Borg spent 12 years at Digital Equipment Corp. She patented a method for generating complete address traces used for analyzing and designing high-speed memory systems. In 1987 she started Systers, an e-mail list providing mentors and support to women in computing.
