UC Berkeley Group Said To Pursue $10 Cell Phone

UC Berkeley's Center for Information Technology Research in the Interest of Society (CITRIS) is in talks with Taiwanese telecom manufacturers to see whether it's possible to manufacture a $10 cell phone, according to report in Taiwan-based DigiTimes.CITRIS has contacted a number of Taiwan-based companies, including Foxconn (Hon Hai Precision Industry), Compal Communications, and Quanta Computer about the $10-handset initiative, the news service said. Quanta manufactures laptops for the One Laptop Per Child initiative, driven by Nicholas Negroponte at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, EE Times noted.
In addition to Taiwan makers, Intel and Microsoft are expected to participate in the program, according to the news service, which reported that demand for such extremely low-cost handsets could reach 500 million units.
