UMB Implements VoIP

University of Maryland, Baltimore has replaced its old voice mail system with CallXpress from Applied Voice and Speech Technologies (AVST) as a part of a phased migration to voice over IP."We were impressed with how simple it was to convert our Octel system to CallXpress," said Paul Petroski, assistant vice president in the Center for Information Technology Services at the university, in a prepared statement. "Our users love the new system. CallXpress emulates Octel so well that training was easy and minimal. Our users were up and running on the system without delay."
Features of the new system include:
- An automated attendant to transfer calls to different departments;
- A call tracking system that reports calls to and transferred within the university; and
- The ability to check email over the phone.
The University of Maryland's Baltimore campus is public university for professional and graduate education. The campus currently has 5,300 students enrolled with 6,600 faculty and staff.
