Open Source Excellence at UC Santa Cruz

Sun Microsystems has named the University of California, Santa Cruz as its first OpenSPARC Center of Excellence, establishing a collaborative partnership between the company and university faculty who work with the OpenSPARC community on the processor code first released as open source by Sun in 2006."UCSC is truly pioneering a new approach to processor development by leveraging open source technologies to drive innovation," said Kim Jones, Sun's vice president of global education. "We anticipate that their efforts will not only deliver great benefits to the OpenSPARC community, but also positively impact the future course of how all microprocessors are designed."
University of California, Santa Cruz Assistant Professor of Computer Engineering and OpenSPARC community governing board member Jose Renau will lead the new Center of Excellence. The work resulting from the OpenSPARC Center of Excellence partnership will be freely available for review.

Semantics is a sub-field of linguistics that focuses on meaning making in language. Therefore, the Semantic Web we're still reaching for will be based on a set of definitions, languages, and standards that can base a search on the detection of meaning and not just on a simple character string.
