Georgia Extends Faculty Software Discounts to Students

The University of Georgia's IT department has launched a buying program that extends to students significant discounts on the prices of software that previously were only made available to faculty and staff.As a result, students can buy a copy of Adobe Acrobat 8.0 Pro for $60 instead of the $500 price tag on the software at Office Max or Best Buy. The Managed Software Distribution program offers most software packages for 50 percent to 75 percent off retail prices. After Effects 7.0 Pro, Photoshop Extended CS3, and Windows Vista Business 2007 are included in the deal.
Previously, university could offer software only to faculty and staff for institutional use because of restrictions in its charter from the Board of Regents. Georgia Chief Information Officer Barbara White requested software also be available to students, as a part of Compact Planning, a program in which the IT department discusses new long term strategies to advance technology on campus.
