Hamline U Adopts Hosted E-Mail Security

Hamline University in Minnesota has switched its e-mail security over to the Proofpoint on Demand hosted service. The campus had previously housed its own system on premises but outgrew that system as the volume of spam and malware increased for it's approximately 10,000 e-mail accounts, according to the university.

The move to the hosted service was designed to alleviate manual intervention on the part of IT when dealing with a growing number of messages being flagged incorrectly as spam and spam messages making it through the filter.

"With Proofpoint on Demand, we get the same level of control and customization as with Proofpoint's appliance or software, but Proofpoint manages everything else," said Anthony Schroeder, director of network services with Hamline University, in a statement released this week. "After configuring our preferences, we basically just flipped the switch and immediately nearly 100 percent of spam was stopped right at the gateway. And the extremely high accuracy of Proofpoint's anti-spam technology has eliminated the issues we used to experience with false positives. We haven't looked back since. The best part is that the administrative involvement on my end is virtually zero."

Proofpoint on Demand provides a Web-based administrative interface for setting up policies and allows the university to customize preferences for individual users, who can decide whether to review quarantined messages by categories (all messages flagged as spam or just certain types of messages flagged as spam). It provides anti-spam, anti-virus, e-mail policy enforcement, and data loss prevention features. It also provides alerts and reporting capabilities.

Hamline University serves about 4,600 undergraduate and graduate students in Saint Paul, MN.
