Clemson Expands Campus Safety Services

Clemson University in South Carolina has beefed up its campus safety systems with the expansion of emergency notification systems and a new university safety site that provides information on safety issues and signups for messaging services.

According to information released by the university Tuesday, Clemson U is now offering students, faculty, and staff text message alerts and an upgraded siren system that now supports voice warnings to provide details on weather-related problems or evacuation situations.

The text messaging system can be set up through Clemson's Blackboard system and will provide emergency alerts, weather warnings, and information about campus closures.

In addition to the upgraded sirens and text messaging options, Clemson also provides e-mail alerts and will, in the future, offer desktop pop-up alerts as well. The university has also joined in the local e-911 system.

"The safety of the students, faculty and staff at Clemson has always been a top priority; however, the tragedy at Virginia Tech last spring led us to take steps to make the campus even safer," said Bill Daniel, fire chief at Clemson U, in a statement released by the university this week.

Beyond technology-based safety solutions, Clemson has also added six people to its police department and launched a new "Caring Network," which aims to identify troubled students and "diffuse" issues before they become major problems.
