Microsoft Corp.made available a public beta release of its Forefront security solution, code-named "Stirling." The software is an integrated security system designed to allow administrators to control, access, and manage security capabilities across an organization's IT infrastructure. It includes a central management console for security configuration and enterprise-wide visibility and works with other ForeFront products that secure clients, Exchange, SharePoint, and the next version of Internet Security and Acceleration Server (ISA Server).

Anzen, an Alexandria, VA company that provides personal security training for public and corporate organizations, announced a new program to address safety in educational institutions. Called USA Safe Schools, the initiative provides schools with tools and training to reduce hostile threats to teachers and students.

HP has introduced several products to address data protection and compliance in storage environments, including add-ons that do automated data encryption on tape drives and libraries. Among the offerings: a secure fabric switch; an encryption kit for tape autoloaders and libraries; integration of compliance and management appliances; and, a free online security assessment tool.

A Spokane, WA company has developed a computer network-based alarm system that allows users to trigger an emergency alarm through their computers to send a silent alert to all other users logged into the same network. Pentad Systems' LANalarm could complement text messaging-based notification systems, which tend to have a lag between the time the emergency is communicated to administrators and the notification is actually sent out to participants.

A technical report from a University of Houston Department of Health and Human Performance researcher finds that students in a hybrid class that incorporated instructional technology with in-class lectures scored a letter grade higher on average than their counterparts who took the same class in a more traditional format.

Nearly a year and a half after striking their improbable alliance to provide better interoperability between open source and Windows-based platforms, Microsoft and Novell told developers last week that the pact has yielded technical benefits but there's still work to be completed, particularly on the interoperability between the two companies' enterprise directory platforms.

Microsoft last week provided new details about the life of its popular Windows XP operating system. The company plans to extend the licensing of Windows XP Home version, but only to original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) that plan to include the OS in "ultra-low-cost personal computers."

The University System of Georgia has deployed the ADVA Optical Networking Fiber Service Platform 3000RE optical transport system to expand its statewide communications network. PeachNet supports 60 University System of Georgia (USG) sites, as well as other government agencies, education institutions and public libraries in the state. The ADVA solution supports high-bandwidth research and online learning applications.

The MIT Media Laboratory and Bank of America have announced the creation of the Center for Future Banking, a five-year collaboration. The new center, which will be located at the Media Lab on the MIT campus, will explore new ideas in banking by inventing technologies that reveal and leverage insights across a wide range of physical and social scales, from one-on-one customer interactions to global transactions.

This summer Barnard College will deploy about 150 Meru 802.11n-enabled wireless access points in five campus dormitories to provide students with high-performance wireless coverage when they return for the fall term. The deployment will continue in 2009 to additional dorms as well as in The Nexus, a 70,000-square-foot building under construction that will serve as the college's social center.

Just months after forming a new center to manage digital scholarship, Johns Hopkins University has chosen a system from Kirtas Technologies for digitization work in the school's Sheridan Libraries. The collections form the major research library resources for the university and include rare and unique volumes, many that are deteriorating.

Loyola College in Maryland has upgraded to a new version of PacketShaper in preparation for a network upgrade that could quadruple bandwidth to as much as 500 Mbps. The college will use the enhanced software from Packeteer to manage and monitor performance for the school's network traffic, which includes streaming media-based academic content, administrative functions and recreational use.

Panasonic has launched two new projectors designed for fixed installations in classrooms: PT-F200NTU and PT-F200U, both upgrades to the previous PT-F100 series. The PT-F200NTU includes built-in wireless connectivity and support for streaming video.
