As a freelancer, I've had to work with databases quite often. In my earlier years, I worked with Microsoft Access, creating Visual Basic for Applications forms to interact with my data tables and queries. As my needs matured, I moved on and embraced MySQL and the various front ends for it due to the increased versatility offered by such solutions.

Continuing and professional education (CPE) sites are somewhat effective at helping students with their enrollment decisions, but they're lacking in some key functionality areas: content, search capabilities, and multimedia. In the second of its three-part series of research reports, "Optimizing School Web Sites as a Marketing and Recruitment Tool," education consultancy Eduventures found that prospective continuing education students in large part think these sites come up short in areas they consider crucial and made specific recommendations for the types of content that should be added to these sites to boost their effectiveness.

As part of a system-wide migration of administrative technologies, the University of Colorado (CU) is switching out its current student information system in favor of an Oracle solution and also adopting Oracle SOA Suite to build a service-oriented architecture in an effort to improve IT efficiency. According to CIBER Enterprise Solutions, which worked with Oracle Consulting on the project, this marks one of the first implementations of the Oracle SOA Suite in higher education.

IBM said today it's entered into a definitive agreement to acquire Cognos, a firm that provides business intelligence technologies to K-12 and higher education and other sectors. The deal is still dependent on shareholder and regulatory approval and other conditions but is expected to close in the first quarter of 2008 and is valued at about $5 billion.

Several universities and colleges have recently purchased and deployed Oracle solutions for administration and marketing, the company reported at the Educause show in Seattle, WA. These include student lifecycle management, enterprise resource management, and marketing applications. Oracle provided details on three of these implementations: Brigham Young University-Hawaii, Hobart and William Smith Colleges, and Moody Bible Institute.

The National Transcript Center (NTC) reported late last week that five states have adopted its preK-20 electronic transcript exchange system over the last year. These include Colorado, Connecticut, Texas, West Virginia, and Wyoming. NTC handled the development and deployment of the records systems.

City University of New York (CUNY) is revamping its administrative systems, consolidating a wide array of student information, human resources, and financial systems as part of its Fully Integrated Resources and Services Tool (FIRST) project. The university system, which comprises 23 institutions serving more than 430,000 students, will integrate its data using Oracle's PeopleSoft Enterprise Campus Solutions 9.0, for which Oracle will also provide hosting and consulting.

Campus Management has completed beta testing on a program to integrate Moodle into its administrative and academic tools for higher education, including CampusVue. The result is a newly released learning management system called CampusLearning, which works with CampusVue, providing commercial support for the open-source platform and synchronization with the company's student information system.

IBM last week formed a new superinitiative called the Center for CIO Leadership, a global community of executives and academics focused on developing CIOs and advancing the profession as a whole. The Center will be headed by Executive Director Harvey Koeppel, with a governing council comprising CIOs and professors from MIT, INSEAD, Harvard, and other institutions.
