Sun-Microsoft Collab Results in Interop Center

Sun Microsystems and Microsoft are working together to develop a set of guidelines for implementing Exchange Server 2007 on Sun server and storage hardware. Billed as Sun's Infrastructure Solution for Exchange, the guidelines allow scalable implementations for 1,000 to 20,000 mailboxes.

Social networking sites aren't just for fun. In what may be the future for college recruiting efforts, some 300,000 students now use a social networking site called Zinch specifically to network with colleges. On Zinch, prospective students can enter a personal profile that gives colleges in-depth information well beyond grades and test scores. From the other side, Zinch says that more than 450 colleges and universities are using Zinch as a high-powered recruiting tool.

Microsoft Expands Office Live Workspace Beta Worldwide

After nearly three months of private beta testing involving about 100,000 users, Microsoft Office Live Workspace (OLW) is being rolled out worldwide as a full public beta. Previously, participants had to be qualified by Microsoft for the beta; now, as of today, it's open to all comers who wish to create workspaces. The channel hosts videos featuring various aspects of the university, including academics and faculty, campus life, distance learning, and athletics. Among the current videos featured are faculty spotlights, an ONFilm Festival promo, virtual tours of forthcoming athletic facilities, and a helicopter tour of the campus.

Blackboard Opens Data Center for Delivery of Managed Services

Education software company Blackboard has opened its fifth international data center. The latest one is located in Sydney, Australia, to host software services for higher education clients based in Asia Pacific time zones. The company said it currently has 520 clients that use hosted services, in sizes ranging from a few hundred end users to a million.

Community College Upgrades Network for Video Collaboration

Bucks County Community College in Newtown, PA has upgraded its data network and installed Extreme Networks switches to support video collaboration applications. Additionally, all servers were upgraded to Gigabit speeds. Extreme BlackDiamond 8800 switches support the core of the network, and Summit X450 switches outfit the edge. These switches feature Power over Ethernet (PoE), as well as routing capabilities. PoE enables network devices to run off a single CAT5 Ethernet cable that carries both data and power.
