This weekend, Stanford University hosted the first public performance of the earliest known human voice recording--one that predates Thomas Edison's invention of the phonograph by 17 years. Yahoo! Backs OpenSocial; New Foundation Formed

Yahoo! announced Tuesday that it's joined forces with Google and MySpace to back OpenSocial, which aims to define a common API to allow social applications across multiple sites. Google, Yahoo!, and MySpace are also creating a non-profit foundation to "foster the continued open development of OpenSocial."

Arkansas Using Data Quality Tools in Information Quality Graduate Program

BEA Systems Releases WebLogic Portal 10.2

BEA Systems, a provider of enterprise infrastructure technology, announced the availability of WebLogic Portal 10.2 earlier this month. The solution is a Java-based portal for service-oriented infrastructure. It supports the creation of Web pages with dynamic content, as well as composite applications and Web 2.0 apps.

Microsoft Takes First Steps Toward Eclipse Support

Microsoft has added another nickel to its open source credibility bank this week with the announcement of its first collaboration with the Eclipse Foundation. The world's largest proprietary software maker and the non-profit host of the open source Eclipse project will work together to allow the Eclipse Standard Widget Toolkit (SWT) to use Microsoft's Windows Presentation Foundation (WPF), according to Sam Ramji, director of Microsoft's Open Source Software Lab.

JBuilder Integrates Swing Designer

CodeGear has teamed up with Instantiations, a provider of software products, services and technologies for Eclipse, Java and Smalltalk. The companies plan to add Instantiations' Swing Designer visual layout tools to CodeGear's JBuilder integrated development environment (IDE). Swing Designer will be part of the JBuilder 2008 release, due in April from CodeGear, the development-tools arm of Borland Software Corp. JBuilder will be the first commercial Java IDE to integrate this technology, company representatives said.

IBM Funds University Efforts To Expand Jazz Platform

IBM announced that it is awarding six research grants to universities to help the schools prepare students for the increasingly global nature of software development. The new research grants will help students research projects built on the IBM Jazz technology platform. The amounts weren't specified.

Mesh Devices Get Smaller To Increase Wireless Reach

An associate professor and a team of researchers at the Graduate School of Information Science and Electrical Engineering at Kyushu University in Japan have developed a prototype of a "micromini" wireless mesh station, under the MIMO-Mesh project. The technology, which is small enough to fit on a person's palm, acts as an access point to increase the reach of wireless networks without the need for additional infrastructure.

Rochester Institute of Technology Kicks Off Corporate R&D Program

The Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) has launched an unusual collaborative research effort with the corporate world. The Rochester, NY school has entered into an agreement with telecommunications company PAETEC for the first project under RIT's new "Corporate R&D" program, in which faculty and graduate students will conduct research for companies, with the companies themselves retaining intellectual property rights to the research developed.

IBM Addresses Web 2.0 Security Concerns With 'SMash'

Mashups allow users to gain insight on complex situations but, as with all Web-based initiatives, security has been a concern.

Intel, Microsoft Collaborate with Universities on Parallel Computing Initiative

For Microsoft and Intel, the computing universe is going parallel. Representatives from the companies met with reporters Tuesday morning to talk about a new parallel computing initiative involving the launch of two multi-million-dollar Universal Parallel Computing Research Centers--one at University of California, Berkeley and one at University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, which were selected from 25 universities evaluated for the initiative. The companies have committed $20 million over the next five years to fund the centers, which will focus on applications, architecture, and operating systems.

Symposium Focuses on Use of 3D in Education

German University Installs Research Supercomputer Powered by 2,048 Processors

Technische Universitat Dresden has gone public with its installation of an SGI supercomputer, which is being used by German researchers in the campus' Center for Information Services and High-Performance Computing. TU Dresden installed an SGI Altix 4700 system powered by 2,048 Intel Itanium 2 processors and 6.5 terabytes of main memory.
