- In a move that plenty of other institutions are sure to follow, Oregon's Pacific University has integrated its emergency notification system with the popular social networking sites Facebook and Twitter. The move allows the 3,100-student university to send emergency messages to students via e-mail, RSS feed, or text message to mobile phones, Blackberries, wireless PDAs, pagers, and smart or satellite phones--and now Twitter or Facebook. - Organizations will be dedicating a larger chunk of their IT budgets in 2009 to security measures, according to a survey by Web security vendor Finjan. Conducted in December 2008 among 200 IT and security professionals, the survey focused on determining the trends for allocating IT budgets in 2009 compared to 2008.More
- The University of Nottingham in the United Kingdom has implemented new call center technology from NEC Philips Unified Solutions. The upgrade enables the university to expand its existing call center application, which is used by a number of schools and departments including IT support, an onsite NHS health center, a customer service center, and finance and payroll departments. In addition, the new implementation provides re-routing of all incoming calls as part of a new disaster recovery strategy.More
- William Woods University in Fulton, MO said it has selected Mirage Networks' network access control (NAC) product to secure the residential network. The university is deploying full-cycle NAC in its resnet with plans to expand to the faculty and staff networks next year. The campus is moving away from a Cisco solution, which has been in use for a couple of years.More

- University of California, Davis has installed highly energy efficient LED lighting in one of its parking structures that features activity-sensing technology adapted and developed at its own California Lighting Technology Center. The lighting provides enhanced nighttime visibility while reducing energy consumption by up to 80 percent compared with the metal-halide fixtures that were replaced.More
