Evaluating the Impact of Educational Analytics

Educators have historically relied upon data such as attendance and class participation to identify at-risk students who may be struggling. While observation and personal interaction with students are important aspects of ensuring learning outcomes, there is great demand in the higher education community for data that measure student engagement with digital course materials as a means to facilitate student success.

CourseSmart Analytics was developed specifically to address some of the most compelling challenges in higher education: improving retention, controlling costs, and improving learning outcomes. A pilot program for CourseSmart Analytics was announced in November 2012, comprising 76 faculty members, 26 administrators, and more than 3,700 students. One year later, the results of that pilot have been analyzed for effectiveness, and published in a white paper written by Rey Junco, a Fellow at the Berkman Center for Internet & Society at Harvard University.

Rey Junco and Sean Devine, CEO of CourseSmart, will discuss this compelling research and how CourseSmart Analytics offers a new vision of engagement with digital course materials, combining observable classroom behavior with reading engagement data gleaned from eTextbooks.

In this webinar, you will learn about:

  • The ability of educational analytics to transform teaching, learning, and organizational performance
  • The efficacy of digital textbook analytics – specifically the CourseSmart Engagement IndexTM – as an effective method of formative assessment that can be used to identify and help at-risk students

Presented by:

  • Rey Junco, Associate Professor, Library Science Purdue University; Fellow, Berkman Center for Internet & Society, Harvard University
