Syllabus Fall2001 Call for Papers
Syllabus is now accepting proposals for its fall2001 Conference and Exposition,
entitlted "Next Steps: Moving Forward with Campus IT." Held in the Boston area
November 29 -December 2, 2001 at the Sheraton Ferncroft Resort in Danvers, Mass.,
the conference will attract faculty, administrators, and IT pro-fessionals who
want to explore the latest applications of information technology in higher
education institutions. The conference offers an environment in which attendees
encounter exemplary campus implementations of technology for teaching as well
as administration, and they discover how new media are best integrated into
the teaching and learning process.
In eight tracks, the Syllabus fall2001 conference will examine the central
themes and key technologies that have become increasingly important to diverse
constituent groups in higher education as they move forward together with strategic
technology planning and innovation.
Interested parties are invited to submit proposals for conference or post-conference
sessions, including one-hour breakout presentations, one-hour panel sessions,
poster sessions, half- and full-day hands-on workshops, and half- and full-day
classroom seminars. The deadline for submissions is June 1, 2001. Conference

Nova Southeastern University Law Center Launches Web Site
Shepard Broad Law Center has announced the launch of the Web site at http://www.mhl.nsulaw.nova.edu
for a new online Master's degree program in health law (MHL). Designed to educate
non-lawyer health care professionals about health-related legal issues, the
program provides skills that can be applied to the job responsibilities of health
care professionals and will help them to communicate with lawyers more effectively.
The Master's in health law is a two-year program taught almost entirely over
the Internet. The Web site provides an overview of the program, academic information,
questions and answers, and a list of faculty and staff. Students may apply to
the program using the Web site's online application.

Interactive Business Research Announces Online Tutorial Series
Interactive Business Research, a virtual service provider of business research
tools and training to the corporate market, recently announced a co-publishing
agreement with the University of Southern California's Marshall School of Business
and the Marshall Libraries to develop and market a series of online business
and financial research tutorials. The tutorials will be authored by local business
and financial research experts in the Los Angeles area and class-tested with
Marshall School MBA students who will be able to access the tutorials on the
enhanced MarVEL Web site, a virtual research center developed by the Marshall
School of Business Crocker and Accounting Library with the continuous support
of Andersen LLP. According to William Benjamin, chief executive officer of Interactive
Business Research, the series of research tutorials will cover almost every
research subject a student or corporate researcher will encounter and includes
separate tutorials on each major industry as well as 20 major foreign markets.

George Mason's Internet Lab Completes Testing
The Advanced Internet Lab (AIL) at George Mason University recently announced
the completion of new leading-edge code testing for Multi-Protocol Label Switching
(MPLS). The tests focused on demonstrating vendor interoperability and the ability
of the MPLS Label Distribution Protocol (LDP) and MPLS Resource Reservation
Protocol for traffic engineering (RSVP-TE) to efficiently provision networks
using traffic engineering and Virtual Private Networks (VPNs), which are key
to carriers' development of next-generation Internet Protocol (IP) services.
The purpose of George Mason University's Advanced Internet Lab is to conduct
research on high-performance, large-bandwidth, Internet core networks.

Optically Attached Storage Maximizes WAN Data Delivery
Storage Computer Corporation, a worldwide provider of high performance storage,

MIT Certificate Program Teaches Advanced Logistics
MIT's Center for Advanced Educational Services brings the current state of
logistics into focus through a six-part certificate program called E-Business
2001: Logistics. Co-produced with PBS The Business & Technology Network, this
new program taught by MIT professor Larry Wein delves into two critical areas
of e-business supply chain management--demand forecasting and inventory management.
Through the use of case studies, participants will also get a view of real-world
logistics challenges, such as the management of Hewlett-Packard's supply chain
for its DeskJet Printer. The program is targeted to supply chain managers, systems
planners, and logistics and operations professionals. Participants who complete
the program receive a Certificate of Completion from MIT.
The six-part program airs via the private satellite network of PBS The Business

Yahoo! Broadcast Delivers Rich Media Content
Recently, Yahoo! Inc. unveiled Yahoo! Broadcast (http://broadcast.yahoo.com),
an enhanced rich media destination where consumers can access interactive audio,
video, and other multimedia content from providers available in real time and
on-demand.
Yahoo! has created a platform to deliver streaming content in the
future and has brought together many consumer streaming services currently available
in one place on the Web. Yahoo! Broadcast already delivers a wide variety of
programming, aggregated under content-themed categories including Live Online,
Music, Movies, News, Science, Travel, Weather, Sports, Shopping, Classic TV
and Profiles. Yahoo! Broadcast delivers content through a three-window Internet
experience where the video plays in the upper left window, related information
is presented on the right, and the bottom window is a Web browser.
ABI Conference Highlights Bluetooth Connectivity

solutions at the Allied Business Intelligence (ABI) conference, "Bluetooth 2001:

Distance Learning Pioneers Recognized
The United States Distance Learning Association (USDLA) recently presented
its prestigious 2001 Eagle Award to the Honorable William J. Janklow, Governor
of South Dakota. USDLA also honored three outstanding individuals with USDLA
Hall of Fame awards, recognizing the contributions to distance learning of Don
R. Foshee, Jolly T.Holden Ph.D., and Frank B. Withrow, Ph.D. Former USDLA Treasurer,
Colonel Bruce S.Byrne, was also honored with a special award for his service
to the distance learning community. The awards ceremony was held in conjunction
with the 2001 e-Learning Conference and Expo in Washington, DC.

Canadians Gain Access to Hawaii Neurosurgeons Online
St. Francis Healthcare System of Hawaii is sponsoring live Internet chats that
people in Canada can log on to for free and ask neurosurgeons in Hawaii questions
about a high-tech treatment called the Gamma Knife. The Gamma Knife is a radiosurgical
device that treats brain tumors with precisely focused 201 sources of radioactive

Partnerships Provide Access
Abilene, a nationwide Internet2 network, announced last month that state education
networks in Michigan, Missouri, Oregon, Virginia, and Washington will establish
connectivity under a new policy that allows expanded access to the high-performance
educational backbone. Partnerships with Internet2 universities and regional
networking organizations will provide institutions such as elementary schools,
secondary schools, community colleges, museums, and libraries access to the
national high-performance network. Access to the high-performance backbone,
leveraged by network upgrades at the state and local networks upgrades, will
allow expanded use of applications that don't work well or at all on today's
Internet. Access to Abilene is now available to educational organizations through
partnerships with organizations with existing connections.

Training Program for Faculty Teaching Online
Blackboard Inc., a provider of e-learning Internet infrastructure software,
and OnlineLearning.net, a provider of continuing adult education courses online,
recently announced that they have expanded their partnership to offer two Black-board-endorsed
online training courses for instructors. The courses are geared to faculty who
are developing both Web-enhanced and fully online courses using Blackboard 5,
an e-learning software solution. In addition to offering instruction on how
to use the Blackboard platform, the new OnlineLearning.net courses will provide
training on online teaching and learning pedagogy and how to effectively set
up an online class. The courses last for four-weeks, are led by an instructor,
and are taught completely online. They will run monthly beginning in May. Registration
