 U. Illinois, Security Firm, Start Info Assurance Center
The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and Argus Systems Group, Inc., 
  a company specializing in security technologies, jointly launched the Center 
  for Advanced Research in Information Security. The Center will be located in 
  the school's computer science department, which was designated as a Center of 
  Academic Excellence in Information Assurance by the National Security Agency. 
  The center will focus its research on next generation infrastructure security 
  technologies, and aims to influence public policy in the area of information 
  assurance.

 Central Conn. State Unveils M.S. in Data Mining
Central Connecticut State University has introduced an online master's degree 
  program in data mining. The curriculum, introduced in Jan. 2002, is aimed at 
  meeting the demand for IT professionals who analyze database information for 
  business decision-makers. The degree program, which will feature training in 
  Clementine, a data mining analytics platform from SPSS Inc., will be offered 
  via OnlineCSU, the school's web system. The M.S. degree can be completed in 
  four semesters but has prerequisites in calculus and computer science.

Dartmouth Website Offers Real Estate Service
 Dartmouth College's real estate office has launched a website to help the 
  school's 2,400 faculty, staff and graduate students in the tight New Hampshire 
  housing market. The site, redesigned by Essex Junction, Vt.- based InnoSoft 
  Inc., lets browsers search for new housing, order repairs and service for current 
  housing, submit housing applications, and learn about various community services.

Harvey Mudd Conference Pushes Women to Enter Math Fields
Harvey Mudd College chapter of the Society of Women Engineers (SWE) is hosting 
  its annual one-day Women Engineers and Scientists of Tomorrow Conference to 
  encourage Southern California high school women to enter the math-based science 
  and technology fields. The conference, to take place on March 2, from 9 a.m. 
  to 3:30 p.m. on the school campus, is designed to give high school women an 
  opportunity to learn about careers in the fields of engineering, math and science 
  by meeting successful women engineers, scientists, and students majoring in 
  these subjects.

Seeds of Engineering Careers Sown in Adolescence
A survey of more than 1,200 engineers found that the drive to invent and design 
  is a major catalyst for becoming an engineer and is a often discovered in middle 
  and high school, a critical time for developing math and science skills. The 
  survey was conducted by MathSoft Engineering & Education, Inc., a developer 
  of design software. Of those surveyed, 59 percent identified that their career 
  interests developed before or during the tenth grade. More than 75 percent decided 
  to pursue their careers because of an affinity for math and science.

Online Masters Degree in Health Law Enters Second Year
Nova Southeastern University said a second class of students had begun its 
  online master's degree program in health law. The graduate program is designed 
  to educate non-lawyer health care professionals about health- related legal 
  issues. The masters is a two-year program taught almost entirely over the Internet. 
  Short residential sessions each year supplement the program, which is designed 
  for working professionals, full-time practitioners, administrators, military 
  personnel, nurses, and leaders in the health care industry.

Surveys of Online Learning and Teaching Released
Two survey reports related to the use of the Internet in teaching and training 
  have been made available online. "Online Teaching in an Online World" looks 
  at the preferences of 222 college instructors who have used the Web to share 
  syllabi and course resources in the World Lecture Hall or MERLOT.org The report 
  examines instructor training, support, and resource exchange, as well as e-learning 
  attrition rates, decision-making, and tool preferences. The second report, "Online 
  Training in an Online World," based on survey responses of 201 corporate trainers, 
  looks at the types of training offered online, organizational factors limiting 
  the adoption of e-learning, preferred e-learning instructional approaches, and 
  e-learning assessment.

Awards, Deals, Contracts in the Higher Ed Community
  - Five Pennsylvania colleges and universities purchased licenses for the Campus 
    Pipeline Web Platform to provide Web access to campus information and services. 
    The schools are Drexel University, Lehigh University, Philadelphia College 
    of Osteopathic Medicine, Saint Joseph's University, and York College. The 
    Campus Pipeline Web Platform is enterprise integration software that serves 
    as a hub for Web-based campus services.
 
 
-  The California State University, Fresno, purchased 25 seats of Cosmos/Works, 
    a computer-aided design platform, from Structural Research & Analysis Corp.
 
 
- The University of California, Los Angeles, will equip its police force with 
    the Mobile Data Browser from HTE Inc., a provider of enterprise-wide software 
    solutions for government agencies. The software allows officers to wirelessly 
    exchange messages and graphics files and tap into law enforcement databases 
    when they are away from the station.
