Higher Ed Association to Set Digital Media Teaching Standards
Sixteen universities and colleges have formed the International Digital Media
and Arts Association, which will provide research, organizational and teaching
assistance in creating standards for evolving digital media curriculum. The
group will also work to establish best practices, certification, and targeted
workshops for students and faculty.
Participants include: Ball State University; Carnegie Mellon University; Case
Western Reserve University; Columbia College Chicago; Florida State University;
State University of New York; Stetson University; Union University; University
of California-Los Angeles; University of Central Florida; University of Denver;
University of Florida; University of Georgia; University of Montana; University
of Warwick in England; and University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. Scott Olson, Ball
State's dean of the College of Communication, Information, and Media, has been
elected its first chairman and chief executive officer. "The digital genie is
out of the bottle," said Olson. "This is crossing all disciplines."

IT Funding No. 1 Challenge in EDUCAUSE Annual Survey
EDUCAUSE published the results of its fourth annual Current IT Issues Survey,
which cited IT funding challenges as the No. 1 issue on three of the four survey
measures for 2003. The survey also found that security and identity management,
in addition to placing high on measures of importance, are now among the top
ten issues in human and fiscal resource consumption, which suggests campuses
are beginning to take action to address the challenge.
For all sizes and kinds of institutions, three issues rank in the top ten across
all measures: administrative/ERP/information systems; maintaining and upgrading
network and IT infrastructure; and security and identity management. Other top
issues include IT funding challenges, IT strategic planning, and Web services/Web-based
systems. Issues whose rankings have changed significantly from 2002 to 2003
include maintaining and upgrading network and IT infrastructure, which rose
from ninth last year to fourth in 2003 among strategic issues.
Distance education has continued to diminish in rated significance, for the
first time in four years not appearing on the top ten list for any of the four
questions.

IU Krannert Business School to Test Intel’s New Wireless Platform
Intel Corp. chose Purdue University's Krannert School of Management to test
Centrino, the chipmaker's new wireless platform, in business school environments.
One of the high-tech products the MBA students can access on their wireless
laptops is Business Week's new digital media product. ''We've been asked to
put these new products through their paces in a business school environment,''
said G. Logan Jordan, associate dean for administration at Krannert. Intel announced
March 12 that its Centrino technology was the next step in ''unwiring the PC."
Intel is spending $300 million to roll out the product, the company's biggest
marketing outlay since the introduction of the Pentium chip.Stanford Workspaces
Project—Blending Physical and Virtual IT researchers at Stanford are exploring
augmenting a dedicated physical meeting space with "large displays, wireless
or multimodal devices, and seamless mobile appliance integration." It's all
aimed at enhancing collaboration. "In an interactive workspace, physical input
devices belong to the space rather than a specific machine."

which allows users to collaborate in survey creation and data analysis. SurveyShare

membership options. SurveyShare 2.0 provides more than 100 pre-made survey templates
for education, business, government, and general consumer use. It allows users
to send public or private surveys, store respondent information in a personal

PRESENTATION—The Minds International Ltd. unveiled The Digital
Class LCD, a writing tablet that incorporates compression software, one-hour
storage of voice and annotations, and uses only 10MB of hard disk space on average.
The tablet has a 15-inch electromagnetic LCD display that allows users to control
computer functions by touching an electromagnetic pen directly to the LCD screen.
When used with a projector, Digital Class is an alternative to traditional electronic
whiteboards. Digital Class allows annotation over any PC program or image displayed
by the computer.
