Winners of 2003 Adobe Design Awards Named

Nearly 1,000 college students from the U.S., U.K., and Canada competed in the third annual Adobe Design Achievement Awards, which recognizes students skilled in graphic design, illustration, digital film and computer art. Using the latest Adobe products, the students competed in seven categories from print and photography, to digital media.

In a ceremony last week at the Art Institute of Chicago, students were recognized for their achievements.

In the time-based media category, the winners were:
· First place: Philippe Vendrolini from California College of Arts and Crafts, San Francisco
· Second place Toby Kaufmann-Buhler from Royal College of Art, London
· Third place Danielle Aubert from Yale University, New Haven, Conn.

In the illustration category, the winners were:
· First place Yasushi Umibe from Academy of Art College, San Francisco
· Second place Heesun Shin from the School of Visual Arts, New York
· Third place J'eng-kwon Gye from Pratt Institute, Brooklyn, NY

In the photography category, the winners were:
· First place Anthony Guagliano from Art Center College of Design, Pasadena, Calif.
· Second place Melissa Fatto from Parsons School of Design, Toronto
· Third place Kimberlee Whaley from Minneapolis College of Art and Design, Minneapolis

In the print category, the winners were:
· First place Danielle Aubert from Yale University
· Second place Alexander Shoukas from Art Center College of Design
· Third place Hirotomi Suzuki from Academy of Art College

In the group print media category, the winners were:

· First place Jae-Hyouk Sung and Matthew Normand from California Institute of the Arts, Valencia, Calif.
· Second place Andrew Bennet and Raffi Simonian from California Institute of the Arts
· Third place Elizabeth Buchta and Alisa Benfey from California Institute of the Arts

First place winners received $5,000, a trip to Chicago to attend the awards ceremony, a tour of top design studios in the Chicago area, and a selection of Adobe products.

RedVector, John Wiley, Form Partnership for Online Courses

RedVector.com and publishing giant John Wiley & Sons, Inc. have formed a partnership under which a number of Wiley's architectural and engineering titles online for education and training. The alliance allows RedVector.com to expand its online course library with courses developed from Wiley's reservoir of technical and professional content. Wiley is a publisher serving professionals, educators, students, lifelong learners, and scientists. RedVector.com is a developer of online education for professionals in the engineering, architectural, construction, land surveying, interior design, building inspection and landscape architecture industries.

SCT and Blackboard to Offer Enterprise Integration of Products

Blackboard Inc. and SCT announced an agreement to deliver enterprise integration between the Blackboard Learning System and SCT's student information and portal system products. Blackboard Inc. will join the SCT Partner Program and forthcoming developer network, expanding the array of offerings that build on the solid foundation of SCT solutions. Prior to the relationship, a number of colleges and universities have integrated their Blackboard and SCT e-Education systems. Blackboard and SCT will now be able to offer thousands of higher education institutions enterprise integration between the Blackboard Learning System and SCT's student information systems using the SCT Luminis(TM) Data Integration Suite. Blackboard will also integrate the Blackboard Learning System with the SCT Luminis Platform III, which provides institutions with enterprise portal, communication and collaboration capabilities.

SCT, Blackboard Combine on e-Education Products

Using SCT's Luminis Software Development Kit (SDK) and Blackboard Building Blocks architecture, the companies are building interfaces between their respective products to create a seamless e-Education environment that spans administrative, teaching and learning functions. Such interoperability will help improve information management processes across colleges and universities, as it will provide event-driven data integration and authentication integration.

Netscape to Offer Online Courses in Multiple Subjects

AOL subsidiary Netscape and Powered Inc., a provider of interactive marketing solutions, said they would collaboration to create the Netscape Learning Center, an online resource for consumers that will offer for-pay courses on a variety of subjects. For a nominal fee, consumers can enroll in in-depth, instructor-led virtual courses on a variety of topics of interest to them. Course subjects will complement the content available to consumers at Netscape.com, providing them with a deeper understanding of topics such as Money & Business, Relationships and Entertainment. In addition, the Netscape Learning Center will also offer advice on merchandise related to those courses. For example, one of the initial courses, Great Home Videos: Shoot and Edit like a Pro, will not only educate consumers on taking memorable home videos, but also better equip them to make informed purchase decisions on video equipment.

Netscape, Powered, Inc. to Launch New Online Education Service

Chongqing University of China and Xybernaut Corp. last week announced a research and development agreement whereby both will jointly perform R&D in network integrated head mount display (HMD) technologies and ubiquitous applications using wearable computers. Under the agreement, the companies will develop wearable computer circuitry; heat dissipation techniques and technologies; integrated HMD technologies; voice, video capture and transmission technologies; and ubiquitous computing applications. The research will concentrate on strategies, methodologies and intellectual property related to using wearable computing in the workplace in order to achieve benefits such as increased productivity/efficiency, quality improvements for data gathering and dissemination, knowledge management and human safety.
