U.S. Anti-spam Web Pages Shut Down by Attacks
Three Web sites that provide spam blocking lists have
shut down as a result of crippling Internet attacks
in what experts said is an escalation in the war between
spammers and opponents of unsolicited e-mails. Anti-spam
experts suspect that spammers are behind the attacks,
although they have no way of proving it. Congress is
currently considering a federal anti-spam law.

NSF Awards Case Western Reserve University $3 Million
Case Western Reserve University won a five-year, $3
million National Science Foundation ADVANCE Institutional
Transformation Award, a program to promote women in
science and engineering. "The ADVANCE award enables the
university to employ a range of incentives and resources
to stimulate university-wide change," says Lynn Singer, Case's
interim provost and vice president of academic affairs
and ADVANCE project director.

IBM Signs $75 Million Contract with Ohio State University
IBM states that their new three-year contract with Ohio
State University, worth $75 Million, is the biggest-ever
exclusive computer contract between a university and a
single supplier. The company will supply OSU with servers,
desktops, and notebook computers.
California State University System Signs with Blackboard
Blackboard reports that it has signed a system-wide
agreement with the CSU that will serve more than 414,000
students and 46,000 faculty and staff. The Blackboard
Learning System and the Blackboard Portal System will be
available on all 23 CSU campuses. Matthew Pittinsky, Chairman
of Blackboard Inc. says, "The California State University
system has some impressive goals related to academic computing
and eLearning, and we are pleased to be assisting them

With Site Finder, VeriSign Sparks Internet-wide Criticism
VeriSign Inc.'s move last week to steer misdirected
Internet queries to its new search system was a technological
success, lassoing millions of Web users who otherwise would
have landed on search pages operated by other major online
players. For VeriSign, the launch of its Site Finder service
also placed the company at the center of a mounting debate
over who really controls one of the Internet's most vital resources.
