Mobile Firms Develop Scholastic Test-Prep for Cell Phones
Two wireless tech firms have built a suite of wireless
test preparation applications for use on cellular phones.
By downloading the programs onto their cell phones,
students can prep themselves on vocabulary, take quizzes,
and work tutorials with practice questions, customized
feedback, and exam hints. The programs -- for the
Graduate Record Exams and the SATs -- were developed
by Mobile-Mind Inc. and Xap Corp. based on their success
with educational programs for Verizon Wireless. Those
apps, as well as XapMath and XapVerbal, will now be
offered to all wireless carriers.
Firms to Offer Background Check Processing for Higher Ed
Enterprise software developer Datatel, Inc. will join
with a firm that d'es Web-based employee screening to
offer background checking services to colleges and
universities. Through the partnership with Verifications
Inc., Datatel will offer its higher ed clients a discount
on employee screening. Verifications Inc. provides online
access for ordering background investigations and
retrieving results. It maintains that by decentralizing
the process, employment investigations can be handled at
the departmental level, reducing the burden on human
resources staff and lowering the cost-per-hire.

U. Arkansas B-School Receives $1.25M Gift in Data Mining Tool
A New York City-based software firm is donating to
the Sam Walton School of Business at the University
of Arkansas 1.25 million in software licenses for a
genetic-based data analysis tool. With the technology,
UA B-School students will be able to hone skills in
mining business information from large databases.
Fifty licenses of Gmax, software from MineTech Inc.,
will be used in a master of information systems course
on decision support systems. The tool uses a technique
called "genetic programming" to automate the laborious
data testing and variable selection process required
by statistical data modeling.
Sapient Wins Microsoft Award for MIT OpenCourseWare
Microsoft named IT services firm Sapient Inc. the
winner of its annual “Certified Partner Award” in
the Internet Business Solution category for its work
with MIT on OpenCourseWare (MIT OCW), a Web-based
publishing project that enables free, searchable access
to content from 500 MIT courses. MIT OCW provides a
platform for managing up to 1 million resources, and
so is one of the largest Microsoft Content Management
Server implementations. The company had more than 160
entries for the Internet Business Solution category.
MIT OCW executive director Anne Margulies said the
Microsoft/Sapient content management system was running
smoothly in six months, about half the time it had expected.
Campus Management Corp. Names Jawaharlal COO
Campus Management Corporation (CMC), a developer of
student information and workflow management systems
for higher education institutions, named Mahendran
Jawaharlal, Chief Operating Officer. Jawaharlal was
a principal with the higher ed consultancy PlanIT Group,
and has been president and CEO of CARS Information Systems
and resident of Jenzabar Inc.’s Internet Solution Division.
