National LambdaRail High-Performance Network Infrastructure
National LambdaRail Inc. (NLR), a consortium of U.S.
research universities and technology companies, is
launching a new national infrastructure to support
research in ultra-high performance networking and
applications in science, engineering, and medicine.
NLR will stimulate the development of new network
technologies, protocols, services, and applications
and ultimately expand access for researchers and
educators to advanced computational and analytical
tools. Tracy Futhey, Chair of NLR Board of Directors
and Vice President of Information Technology and Chief
Information Officer at Duke University explains, "We will
work closely with the growing set of regional and enterprise
optical networking initiatives to deliver NLR capabilities
to university campuses and into researchers' laboratories."

EDUCAUSE Core Data Service 2002 Summary Report
EDUCAUSE CDS has just released its 2002 summary of
data collected from 561 U.S. colleges and universities
and 65 universities outside the U.S. concerning campus
IT environments and practices. The report includes
information on IT staffing, budgeting, and organization.

Self-Paced eLearning on SAS
SAS unveiled its eLearning Web site for self-paced
instruction related to SAS. The site contains individually
licensed software for users to access interactive
Web-based SAS training. "Enabling customers to license
training at the lesson level is unique in the eLearning
world," says Nancy Goodyear, manager of e-Learning
Technology at SAS. Instruction ranges from basic to
advanced skills in SAS, data warehousing, certification
training, and tutorials at various skill levels.
SUNY-Stony Brook Tech Breakthrough
The State University of New York (SUNY)-Stony Brook
has helped develop the world's first all digital
receiver in partnership with HYPRES Inc., a developer
of supercomputing micr'electronics technology. The
all digital receiver exceeds the performance of
conventional semiconductor technologies through direct
digitization of incoming RF signals. Applications
include satellite communications, signal intelligence,
and radar systems.

New Product: Mobile-Lingo
Mobile-Mind and Transparent Language Inc. have
partnered to produce language learning applications
that can be downloaded to mobile phones. Users can
access commonly used phrases on their cellular handsets
along with quizzes and exercises.

Large Campus Wi-Fi Deployment in Southeast Asia
Kasetsart University, one of the top universities
in Thailand, has deployed a wireless network covering
43 buildings and 800,000 square meters, making it one
of the largest wireless campus networks in Southeast Asia.
KUWiN (Kasetsart University Wireless Network) connects
the Bangkhen campus with three other campuses and will
expand to all 30,000 students and staff in its various
campuses.
