British University Launches Open Source-Based Portal
The University of Nottingham (U.K) launched an institution-wide
portal that will integrate university information and
services into a single online location. The project, which
will use the SCT Luminis platform, is a part of the school’s
eKnowledge strategy. The school ran a pilot program in 2003
using the JA-SIG uPortal technology, becoming the first
British institution to adopt the open source platform. The
University chose to build on the project's success and expand
the scope using portal, content management, and integration
technologies from SCT.
Chesapeake College Embraces Web-based Service Desk
Chesapeake College selected FootPrints, a web-based
service-desk software too, to automate its internal help desk
operations. The system enables Chesapeake's Information
Technology (IT) department to centralize and control all
technical service requests received from hundreds of staff
and 2,500 students located across four sites. Since the
deployment, the school has said it has been able to deliver
more responsive service, improve staff workflow, and ensure
the college maintains its progressive learning environment.
Previously, the school used e-mail to track IT service
requests such as equipment problems, scanner and printer
issues, custom software installs, and error messages on
desktop PCs located in classrooms.
