101 TechStrategies: The Anti-Spam Summit

It used to be a canned luncheon meat, but now it is a pervasive
problem in enterprise communications. Everybody deals with it,
but it is a headache to those responsible for keeping
the network going in organizations of all sizes. 101communications
is interested in finding out how you deal with spam.

As content is developed for the 101TechStrategies: The Anti-Spam Summit,
March 17 – 19, we're searching for interesting stories about how you
battle spam and keep your organization spam free. Have you had successes,
utter failures, or creative uses of different spam fighting technologies?
Share your story and it may be picked to run in an upcoming digital
publication on anti-spam strategies being published by the 101
Conference Group in conjunction with the upcoming summit. Deadline is
January 30, so take a moment and tell us how you keep spam off of your
organization’s menu. Mail your stories to Jim Turner at
[email protected].

Rutgers Nixes Proposal for Merging Three Universities

The Board of Governors of Rutgers University turned down a
proposal by New Jersey Governor James McGreevey to create a
“University of New Jersey” – one 67,000-student research
institution – via a merger with the New Jersey Institute of
Technology and the University of Medicine and Dentistry of
New Jersey. A statement by the governor and the Board of
Governors said merger negotiators ran out of time for
presenting a plan to the state legislature by Jan. 1. A
preliminary report from a consultant working for one of the
restructuring committees said the merger would cost $1.3
billion over 10 years. Under the proposal, the newly created
university would comprise eight medical and dental schools,
a teaching hospital, two engineering schools, two law schools
and dozens of other academic schools and departments.

San Antonio Lures Top Demographer from Texas A&M

The University of Texas at San Antonio has hired Steve Murdock,
the state’s top demographer and will acquire the Texas State
Data Center, the research organization he directs at Texas
A&M University. The Center, which will now be called the
Institute for Demographic and Soci'economic Research, was
created in 1980 as a satellite of the U.S. Census Bureau for
analyzing Texas census data. The center has an annual budget
of $1 million and a staff of 15. Murdock has written 11 books
and more than 150 articles and technical reports on the

has a national reputation as a demographer.

California Higher Ed Gets Lottery Windfall

California State Controller Steve Westly issued payments totaling
$288.6 million to state schools, colleges, and universities
from its Lottery Education Fund. Of that amount $40.5 million
went to state community colleges, $12.4 million to California
State University, and $7.5 million to the University of
California. Under Proposition 20, passed by California voters
in March 2000, a certain percentage of these funds must be
used directly to purchase instructional materials. Payments
from the funds are made quarterly based on Lottery income and
unclaimed on-line prizes. This payment was for the quarter
ending September 30, 2003.

U. Maryland Football Featured in On-Line "Fancasts"

When the University of Maryland Shellacked West Virginia in
the Jan. 1 Gator Bowl, it marked the last of three live
“FanCasts,” interactive Webcasts running on Maryland Football
Coach Ralph “The Fridge” Friedgen’s FridgeTV.com. The Webcasts
feature live e-mail questions and answers as well as
behind-the-scenes content from the Maryland football program.
"In my opinion, FridgeTV is a whole new concept when it comes
to the Internet and what it can do for a football program,"
said Coach Friedgen. "I think the exposure that our program
will have from a marketing standpoint, from a recruiting
standpoint, and the overall expression of what our program
is will not be able to be equaled." FridgeTv.com is produced
by TVWorldwide.com, which develops streaming video programming
for targeted audiences.
