Internet2 Unveils Model for Hybrid Optical and Packet Testbed
Internet2 officials last week introduced the design for a national
testbed that will serve as a model for the next generation of
Internet2's network architecture. The project is part of Internet2’s
Hybrid Optical and Packet Infrastructure (HOPI) project to
investigate next-generation high performance network architectures.
The HOPI testbed was designed for experimentation with hybrid
networks made from both circuit switched and packet switched
infrastructures. "The resulting architecture combines the best
means for experimenting with the attributes of IP and optical
networking, dynamic provisioning, and the scalability of future
hybrid networks,” said Linda Winkler, senior network engineer for
the Argonne National Laboratory and HOPI Design Team co-chairperson.
The testbed will allow researchers to experiment with new technologies
such as dynamically provisioned bandwidth, circuit switched
environments, and new transport protocols. To do so, each HOPI
node will consist of an 10GigE Ethernet switch, a fiber cross
connect switch, and servers to control HOPI's network infrastructure
and measure network performance, all designed to model future
optical infrastructures.

UC Berkeley CIO McCreadie to Retire; Successor Sought
Jack McCredie, associate vice chancellor for information technology
and chief information officer of the University of California at
Berkeley, announced he will retire this summer. McCredie came to
UC Berkeley in 1992 and was responsible for leading central
computing and communications, including coordinating IT planning
and policy-making.
"Few things change as fast as information technology," said Chancellor
Robert Birgeneau. "Jack McCredie has guided UC Berkeley through
the last decade of IT evolution with a sure hand, making sure this
campus had the best tools possible for teaching, research, and the
administrative enterprise that supports them."
McCredie has been active in the Common Solutions Group – a
consortium of universities addressing IT issues and a member of
the board of Internet2, a university-industry-government partnership
to accelerate Internet development. "Our information technology
infrastructure at UC Berkeley is better than it has ever been,
and most important, it is moving in the right direction," said
McCredie in a letter to his staff.
2005 Codie Software Award Finalists in Higher Ed Announced
Finalists for the Codie Awards, presented annually by the Software
& Information Industry Association to recognize achievement and
vision in software, education technology and digital content, were

NCAA Grants Video Streaming Rights to March Madness Tourney
The NCAA signed a deal to grant video streaming rights for
out-of-market coverage of the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball
Championship and upcoming 2005 tournament to CBS SportsLine.com
and College Sports Television (www.cstv.com).
Fans will be able to
watch the live CBS Sports NCAA Tournament broadcasts on their
computers, following the games as they are announced by CBS Sports
announcers.
CBS SportsLine.com has the rights to produce, host and manage the
official NCAA Championship Web site, NCAASports.com, as well as
the Internet rights to the Division I Men's Basketball Championship
and 87 other championships. CSTV.com will offer live and on-demand
streaming video of up to the first 56 NCAA Tournament games on an
out-of-market basis, through the regional semi-finals, and will
also feature streaming video of interviews and pre-and post-game
press conferences. Webcasts of games broadcast by CBS Sports in
fans' local markets will be subject to blackouts.
Deals: ETS, eCollege, Join in Testing, Accreditation Services
ETS, the nonprofit educational testing organization, and course
management system developer eCollege said they would collaborate
to offer an online course evaluation solution to help schools with
accreditation benchmarking.
Under the deal, eCollege customers will be able to purchase access
to ETS' academic assessment instruments, which include the Student
Instructional Report II (SIR II) for on-campus learning and the
e- SIR II for distance learning. Both will also be delivered
through the eCollege platform. In addition to the current paper
version of SIR II, ETS customers also will be able to purchase,
directly from ETS, the new Web-based SIR II and e-SIR II products
delivered through eCollege technology. This offers ETS customers
a fully hosted, scalable and reliable online option.
Deals: Harvard Law Upgrades Web-based Admissions Services
Harvard Law School has selected Datatel Inc.’s Colleague enterprise
resource planning system and its LiquidMatrix ActiveAdmissions
e-recruitment system to support Web-based administrative and
recruiting applications. The Datatel Colleague ERP system will be
used to enhance admissions services via WebAdvisor, Datatel's
self-service solution. The ActiveAdmissions technology will enable
the law school to manage its complex applicant tracking process,
and create personalized online communications to prospective
students.
Steve Kane, registrar of Harvard Law School, said the new
technology would help “(streamline) interdepartmental business
processes and (integrate) data across campus.”
