Universities, IBM, Launch 'Open Research' Projects

Seven universities, together with IBM Corp., last week announced several “open research” projects under a program designed to conform with the Open Collaboration Research Principles, a set of guidelines to promote an open approach to university-industry intellectual property decisions.

Under the program, project results developed between IBM and university participants will be made available as open source software code and all additional intellectual property developed will be openly published or made available royalty-free.

Universities participating in the program include Carnegie Mellon University, Columbia University, Georgia Institute of Technology, Purdue University, Rutgers University, University of California at Berkeley, and the University of California at Davis...

Higher Ed Tax Incentives Discussed in Congress

Negotiators for the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives have agreed to consider a bill that would include the expired tuition tax deduction and research tax credit. Congressional leaders failed in their push for a House vote on the bill on Thursday evening. The bill still faces hurdles in the Senate, as well. The tuition tax deduction and the research tax credit, which expired at the end of 2005, would be retroactively extended under the House plan...
