Quebec U. Filtering Sensitive Information from Campus Nets

The University of Quebec, the largest university in Canada, has deployed a content monitoring and filtering system to block "sensitive, inappropriate or sometimes even confidential information from leaving a particular computer network." The school said the system, called PacketSure 5.0 from Palisade Systems, would also help gain control of its network operating costs.

The target of the filter is the traffic generated by students and employees, the school said. The PacketSure system has a "granular level of management" that manages network bandwidth by controlling what protocols and applications can be accessed. The system is "meeting our goal of managing the bandwidth of our Internet connection by monitoring, reducing, and in some cases blocking peer to peer traffic during the day," said Bernard Goutier, Information Services Project Manager for the University of Quebec.

Gautier added that with the system, "as it is saving bandwidth, we are able to control the cost of our Internet connection."

Minnesota State To Roll Out System-wide CRM Solution

The Minnesota State Colleges and Universities (MnSCU), a sprawling system of 32 state universities and community and technical colleges, is standardizing on a single campus customer relationship management system. The state system is integrating RightNow solutions, which will be used to support programs in MnSCU's Office of the Chancellor, including copyright and intellectual property management, career services, and library operations.

About 18 MnSCU institutions are currently using the platform to support student services, simplify access to financial aid, and optimize recruitment efforts. Based on its performance so far, MnSCU said it wants to deploy RightNow toward "various institutional challenges" across the state, said Kyle Snay, MnSCU's Online Knowledge & Learning Administrator.
