Applying business intelligence principles to higher education

Higher education, generally among the leaders in technology adoption, is late to embrace data warehousing and business intelligence (BI). Fewer than 100 universities, colleges, and community colleges in the United States have recognized data warehousing programs. This represents an adoption rate of less than 3 percent for a discipline well into its second decade of mainstream practice.

Does BI not work for higher education? Or does it simply not apply? The answer to each of these questions must be a resounding "No!" The principles of BI do apply, and the capabilities of BI are critical to institutional success....

Flagler College To Take Historic Buildings Wireless
Flagler College in Florida will deploy a wireless network throughout its campus in an effort to preserve the integrity of the historic buildings on the school's site and to provide centralized security for its wireless users. Alcatel-Lucent will handle the implementation.

Though Flagler has only been a college for about 39 years, its campus includes historic buildings, which the college has spent $43 million restoring, as well as adding new buildings. The main building on the campus, Ponce de Leon Hall, is a national historic landmark....

Indiana University Picks Schnabel as Informatics Dean
Indiana University named Robert B. ("Bobby") Schnabel, considered a national leader in the uses of computers in education, as dean of the IU School of Informatics.

Schnabel is vice provost for academic and campus technology and professor of computer science at the University of Colorado at Boulder. He also serves as chief information officer of CU-Boulder and director of the Alliance for Technology, Learning and Society Institute....
