Dutch University Develops Online Learning Solutions

Delft University of Technology in the Netherlands said it plans to develop online learning solutions with Virage's Rich Media Management software from Autonomy, a developer of software to support infrastructures. The technology will be used to satisfy the new requirements to support advancements in education by the Dutch government.

"Students are used to an efficient and effective digital environment and expect this from educational instruments," said Leon Huijbers, head of the Aula congress centre and multimedia services at TU Delft. "Thanks to Virage, students no longer have to spend hours searching for relevant information and can find the classes they want more quickly. Autonomy also prevents 800 lecturers from having to index the content themselves."

The University's new website is designed to support video recordings of classes. According to Autonomy, "Students can follow, search and review various classes, lectures and research presentations online."

The software is designed to "automatically link metadata to all uploaded files" on the website, according to Autonomy. Video and audio files will be encoded and indexed by the program and users will be able to search for lectures, PowerPoint presentations, and other study materials.
