The University of W™isconsin-Madison picked an insider as its next chief information officer after narrowing the field to three candidates. Ronald Kraemer will become CIO and vice provost for information technology, the university announced, stepping up from his role as deputy CIO and associate director of the Division of Information Technology.
Kraemer, who will take over as CIO Aug. 15, is expected to take an expanded role in developing a campuswide information technology strategy. He succeeds Interim CIO Ken Frazier, who will direct the University Library System. Frazier was interim CIO since July 2006, following the retirement of CIO Annie Stunden.
Two others were in the running for the high-profile job: Kathy Pletcher, associate provost for information services and CIO, UW-Green Bay; and Deanna M. Raineri, associate dean for technology and information services, College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC).
UW-Madison's IT department has 500 full-time employees and a budget of more than $70 million.
