Sun Unveils Family of Open Storage Appliances

Sun Microsystems has recently announced the availability of its new Unified Storage Systems, the Sun Storage 7000 family. Also know as Amber Road, the initial release includes three products: the Sun Storage 7110, 7210, and 7410.

According to the announcement, the systems mark the launch of Sun's Open Storage portfolio and come with a range of standard features, including a "fully-integrated software stack," support for a variety of operating environments, standard high speed networking, and tape connectivity, among others.

The Sun Storage 7110 is the smallest of the three systems, featuring 2 TB of storage. The 7210 features support for up to 48 TB of storage, as well as write-optimized solid-state disks (SSDs). The 7410 will support up to half a petabyte of storage and read- and write-optimized SSDs and is available in clustered configurations.

According to Sun, all of the Amber Road systems come with "comprehensive data services," including snap/clone, restore, mirroring, RAID-5, RAID-6, replication, active-active clustering, compression, thin provisioning, CIFS, NFS, iSCSI, HTTP/FTP and WebDAV, as well as automated updates.

In conjunction with the Amber Road launch, Sun has also announced new service offerings aimed at helping customers implement the Unified Storage Systems. The offerings include implementation, data migration, support (including software and system maintenance), and system administration.

Pricing for the Sun Storage 7110 starts at $10,000. The Sun Storage 7210 begins at $34,995, and the Sun Storage 7410 starts at $57,490 for a single-node version and $89,490 for a clustered 12 TB configuration.
